At the 2010 Women’s Forum Jenny Salt will be opening the book of Joshua with us.
A stirring sermon, a new leader, a renewed resolve to obey God, a fresh start: the book of Joshua begins with Israel poised, once again, on the edge of the promised land. Expectations are high but amid accounts of prostitutes, a halted river, collapsing city walls, mouldy bread, hailstones and the sun standing still, we see that God is faithful but the people are not.
Israel’s story bears some striking resemblances to our own. So, what are we to do with what is basically a story of failure, for both Israel and us? Joshua teaches us to look to our utterly faithful God to intervene. It teaches us to look to Jesus who cried out from the cross, “why have you forsaken me?” so that those words need never pass our lips. It teaches us that as God’s people, we are not forsaken.
